Service Robotics (Laboratory, WS 2006/2007)

General information

Instructor: Prof. Gerhard Lakemeyer, Ph.D.
Assistants: Alexander Ferrein
Stefan Schiffer
This course is held in English and/or German.

One applications for mobile robots is the service robotics. Examples are tourguide robots in museums, security robots, or robots helping in healthcare. Besides low-level tasks like localization or navigation the robots must be able to make intelligent decisions and to interact with humans.

The Knowledge-based Systems Group has a team of soccer robots which were also designed for service robotics applications. In RoboCup 2006 we also participate in the new RoboCup@home league which focuses on service robotics tasks in a domestic environment.

The goal of the lab is to develop a service robotics application for storage picking. The robot should navigate autonomously through a storage environment and help a warehouseman to pick packages. This application includes tasks like mapping the environment, navigation, and localization, but also human machine interaction like informing the warehouseman which goods to pack.

An announcement of the course can also be found in the course information system CAMPUS.
